Learning Problem
Students often have difficulty explaining their thought process, and teachers have difficulty assessing students’ true understanding. One of the reasons for this phenomenon could be that students lack sufficient explanation skill. Explanation is not an inherent skill and needs to be taught and practiced. However, today’s schooling system provides little time for students to practice this set of skills.
On the other hand, strong explanation skills not only facilitates the assessment process and help educators to detect/discover learners’ needs more accurately, but also explanation itself could be perceived as a great learning opportunity. Several studies prove that well-structured explanation practice could enhance learners’ comprehension.
Process Pad provides a scaffolded environment for students to practice their explanation skills. This scaffolding is provided through several sets of activities designed for different subjects and appropriate for different age groups.
Furthermore, Process Pad’s technical features facilitate collaboration among students, while the recorded performance of students on Process Pad could be purpose as a wealthy resource for educators’ formative assessment.
